Up and coming Arab-American talent
Ismail Khalidi is a talented young Arab-American playwriter. His first play, “Truth Serum Blues,” received much attention and now, Khalidi is looking to continue that success with “Tennis in Nablus,” a historical fiction piece that looks at the Arab revolt against the British. He discussed his work, his background and life as an Arab-American with Joseph Mayton
You have a connection to Egypt, can you explain?
My Grandparents were married in Jaffa, in Palestine in the 1940s but they moved to Cairo and raised the family here, so my mother and her siblings grew up in Cairo. My grandmother still lives here, in the same house in Heliopolis since the 1950s. I come and visit her every year. Egypt feels like one of my homes, though as a Palestinian I do not feel totally at home anywhere.
